Protection against degradation of polymer during recycling

The world is moving towards more & more plastic recycling process. During plastic recycling process of polymers some factors like oxidation affects the parameters of plastic being recycled to overcome this problem, antioxident masterbatch are use for maintaining the properties in the recycled products.

Protecting Polymer as we care for Nature

PLAST ANTIOXIDANT MB 051 & 052 PE protect polymers from degradation during processing (short-term) and use (long-term). Degradation causes gel formation, changes in melt flow index, loss of mechanical properties, and aesthetic issues like crazing, gloss reduction, chalking, and discoloration due to heat, sunlight, and oxygen. Antioxidants act as free radical scavengers, preventing polymer chain scission.

Antioxidants, such as Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (2,6 di-tert-butyl-p-cresol), inhibit auto-oxidation in polyolefins. Aerobic degradation occurs gradually at room temperature, while thermal-oxidation happens during high-temperature processing, light-assisted oxidation, and UV exposure.

Preventing Auto Degradation

How it Works?

Generally, thermal degradation is caused in polymers under thermo -mechanical or thermo- oxidative conditions. Heat during polymer processing and end use environment produces free radicals which cause polymer chain scission or breakage leading to loss of mechanical properties.

Polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) undergo oxidative degradation when exposed to oxygen, leading to chain scission. This results in decreased molecular weight, increased melt flow rate, and surface powdering. To mitigate this, antioxidants are added as stabilizers. The degradation process involves the cyclic stages of initiation, propagation, and termination.

Product Description TDS
Plast Anti Oxidant
Prevents loss of physical and mechanical properties in polymers . Prevents gas fading of plastics when subjected to atmospheric pollutants.

Types of Anti Oxidants

Primary AO
They are free-radical scavengers or sometimes called as radical chain terminators consisting of hindered phenol and amine derivatives; generally, the higher the molecular weight of the additive, the better the performance.
Secondary AO
They are peroxide scavengers are often called secondary antioxidants or hydroperoxide decomposers . They are often used in combination with free radical scavengers (primary antioxidants) to achieve a synergistic inhibition effect.
Thioesters
They are organic sulphides containing sulphur which are very effective hydrogen peroxide decomposers during long-term thermal aging and are often used in combination with primary antioxidants that provide good protection during processing, like hindered phenols. Primary antioxidants and thioesters are added to the polymer to provide stability while secondary antioxidants are added to provide colour and processing stability.
